Problems with random lock-up on a HP A705W

i am having bouts of random computer freezing whenever i power on. Sometimes it freezes during startup, other times after extended use. The computer completely freezes, no programs are accessible and there is no control. Computer is four years old, kept in a cold environment. No cursory signs of melting hardware, and all fans are operational. using .5 GB of RAM. Thanks in advance!

What OS are you using? Have you done a reinstall of the OS in those 4 years? Have you checked for spyware and viruses in that time?
