Problem with processor speed

In the control panel on system information it says my computer runs at 900 mHz when you click on it once. Then when you close the window and open it again it says it is at 1.8 gHz(the speed it's supposed to be). What could be wrong?

this is a desktop and it's an AMD sempron chip

boot into the bios and disable cool and quite. AMD's derate the cpu (stepping) when there is no load. Have you installed the cool and quite software that came with your board? If you have you can monitor it buy just opening the software.

I'm no computer wiz by any measure so...
I did not install any cool and quite software
But why would it say it's 900 mHz once then open the window again and it says it's 1.8 gHz
I also don't think I know how to stop the cool and quite...
Booting into the BIOS is like holding down esc when you boot the computer right?

Yeah, you boot into the BIOS by pressing whatever button your computer tells you to press soon as it turns on. Then you simply look through for a Cool n' Quiet option and turn it off.

usually the Delete key gets you into the BIOS. Just tap it a few times before you see the POST screen.
