Default Problem with built in SD card reader

I've got an Inspiron 6400 with Vista installed and I've been trying to use the built in SD card reader. Every time I insert an SD card though, it says that it must be formatted before it can be used. I've tried installing new Ricoh drivers but it still asks to format. Any idea what's going on? It would be so nice not to have to hook up the camera every time I'd like to upload something. Thanks.

Can you connect the camera to your pc via USB? My camera has that capability.
