Is this a power cord issue?

My hp compaq nx5000 notebook won't start up ~_~. When I push the power button, nothing happens. When I push the cd rom button, it opens; when i put a disk in and close it, the hdd light blinks, the optical light blinks, the fans whir a few seconds, then it stops; nothing at all ever comes on the screen. I think it's something to do with the power cord. Like a wire inside frayed, so it can't power it up; though I'm not sure. . Am i right in what I thnk the problem is?

no beeps? go head try a different power cord you can always take it back.

Ugh. I tried my friend's power cord on it, and still the same response. Does anyone know what else it could possibly be?

stuffed screen perhaps but that would normally show symptoms befopre dying. obviously it powers up if you got those responses from the cd drive. does the laptop have a switch for the screen?
