Default Possible harddrive crash

My brothers computer has broken down and I think it is the harddrive that has broken. Is there anyway to check if its deffinately is the harddrive that is broken?

And is it possible to replace the main harddrive with my external harddrive temporarly to see if everything else works on the computer?

Thanks in advance.

Ok, do I have to plug the external drive into some sort of slot or does the USB port work?

Look here

You should be able to find a download for a diagnostic tool for your specific hard drive manufacturer.
