Default PC won't start

I have a pc with windows xp. this computer has been working great until yesterday. When I start it up it appears normal, showing hardware configurations and all that, but then instead start windows the screen goes black.
I tried a lot of things, unppluged everything and put it back together and nothing. I put the windows xp cd and start installing some files, and then said in top of the screen : windodows setup, and in the bottom: windows starting up. but thats all what i get. dont go anywhere from there.
What can be wrong?

What are your computer specs?

I would guess your hard drive is corrupted, but then if Windows setup would not even start, I'd look at memory.

I agree, it sounds like a potential drive issue. What are the specs? I would definitely expect to see this sort of behaviour on an IDE system with a failing drive.
