You would need one helluva fuse to stop a lightning strike. Lightning is usually near 1 billion volts and around 10,000 amps.
 
try a repair install of XP
put in the XP CD and make sure it boots off it (if it doesn't you'll have to change the boot order in the BIOS)

when it loads, press enter (start install), F8 (terms and agreement), then r (repair existing OS)

you'll need your CD key handy

32,000 volts and 100 amps per cubic centimeter of air. ! billion volts wouldn't cut it. from 8000ft that would be 2.8 billion volts and 9.6 million amps.....ouch! But you would only get a small fraction of that thourgh the line (resistance and all). Only a very expensive surge protector would help. Most of use have "surge" protectors that are nothing more than power strips so it is no different than pluging right into the wall!!! If you are getting BSOD that is a good thing. At least the mobo, cpu, mem and video are still working!!! Probably killed the controler chip on the hard drive!!! If you can get into the bios I will bet your HD doesn't show up!!
