So, my sister helped me take some of my pc bits out, while i moved everything into a new case.

She droped my HD, about half an inch and it fell onto my table. I was hoping it didnt damage my HD, but i think it has, ive just got it to boot up, but its very slow and crashing.

What programs should i use to try and fix the errors on the HD, or bad sectors? :(

I really dont want to have to go and buy another HD.

Unless you have extremely bad luck, a slight drop like that shouldn't effect the drive. I would check all of your connections first and make sure nothing is loose. but I would let windows do it's thing with the checkdisk first. I would also reset the bios, just to make sure nothing crazy happened. And as a thought, I would possibly re-seat the CPU... Hopefully you partitioned that drive off, so if nothing else you can reload the OS without loosing all your data.

Hi Nukem, i did just check all the connection, and i put the sata cables in a different sata port. because it was always going to a screen about checking for errors on the hd.

It must of ran for about 2-3 hours, its now letting me boot into windows, but it is crashing, if i was to re-seat the cpu, id have to re-over-clock it. and my cooler is a pain in the butt to take off lol.

I put the mobo and everything in the pc, and it was working fine befor and i havent partitioned it off. because im stupid like that :(

Im just doing a defragment as i type this as well.

I would be surprised if a drop of that height would damage the drive, especially if it wasn't running. What type of crashes are you getting? Is the operating system stopping or is it just programs? Are there any error messages?

You can not fix bad sectors, they are broken. However a drive should skip them automatically I believe. If you can access the SMART info from your drive it should tell you how many bad sectors it has.

Run chkdsk like nukem suggested, else I would recommend backing up your data, reformatting the drive and reinstalling your OS.

What OS are you running? I'm guessing the rest of the specs are the ones in your sig?

Yes, specs of my pc are in my sig, and im on windows 7 ultimate i think. but i have no re-install disk or key to re-install windows :(

Sorry, and no, theres no messages, it just freezes and i cant do nothing but re-set the pc.

Run chkdsk on that drive. If you don't know how open command prompt and type "chkdsk /f c:" without quotes, assuming c: is that drive's letter.

Is this a custom build? How did you originally install the OS? And what kind of crashes are you encountering?

You can also try the system restore and go back to an earlier windows session that saved. and it possible that the OC can be related to the crashes, however remote. try and bring it back down to stock and go from there. Once you get it fixed. I would definitely back up your data.

I got told that it will bottleneck the GPU if it the cpu isnt overclocked............... And the pc already did a system restore, thats how i got it to load up :)

As stated, it's unlikely that such a minor fall would damage a hard drive if it wasn't in operation.
Try checking the hard drive info with Crystal Disk Info.

I will wait till the defragment is done, just incase it crashes again. Im hoping its almost done.

Thank you.

*EDIT*

Ok, just though id give you an update, i let defragment run allnight and it finished, i just did a chkdsk and no errors where found. and the pc seems to be running fine now, its not slow or crashing (yet) But if it does, ill post in here again and it must be something els.

Thank you all for your help :)
