Default Overheating on a external disk reader

i know its a bit bland, but in the first mission impossible, there was some sort of radio device that one of the goons that was on the side of max(the girl) used to clock i guess the heat or whatever on the external reader.
now, what i wondered was is this an actual protocol or some sort of way to track heating in a harddrive or any other kind of external reader (ok, reader isn't the best word) to measure the amount of heat coming from a device to actually see if one is tracking the signal etc.
i couldn't find any other forum for this technique if possible please direct me to it.
