i have two computers. both different. one is a compaq and the other a custom built. they just happen to have the same problem. i have uninstalled the cd drive from the device manager and reinstalled it and i still get an exclamation point next to the optical drive. they are two different types or brands of drives as well. i have been to the mfgr website and downloaded new drivers or firmware for the drives as well with no luck. i have changed jumper settings and even IDE connections. uninstalled and reinstalled the controllers they are on. i am stuck. any help would be much appreciated.

It sounds like the optical drive itself. Is there another one available that you can try ? Check to make sure your cabling is all snug as well.
