Default Only 40 gb out of 80gb harddisk detected

hi..
i recently had a new 80GB hard disk installed on my computer.but the problem is that only 40GB is being detected. here is the necessary info about my comp
Microsoft windows professional XP sp2
Intel pentium3 processor 551 MHz
RAM 256 MB
BIOS Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG
Hard disk Seagate 80GB
Please help me out friends....i am waiting for your reply.

how much space is it showing in disk management?

it is showing 31.49 GB under basic disc 0

Is there a 2nd unpartitioned space on the drive?

in the disk manager, both C and D volumes are being shown as partitioned, nothing else there.

just check in the bios and you can see the actual hard drive capacity. so even if you had unpartitioned space or multiple partitions it will still come up with 1 single hard drive.

Case: don't know what case it is but it is very crappy
Optical Drive: Lite-on 16X DVD+&- RW DL (died) using a CD-ROM drive until I get a new blu ray burner or whatever i can get

Previously my hard disk was set to primary slave...i did the readjustment of the jumper to master as suggested, but then BIOS did not detect any IDE drives.
May be it is a problem with my BIOS...will it be resolved on upgrading the BIOS?
if so are there any sites where i can get it upgraded for free?

Sometimes, there's a jumper that will limit the drive size to 32GB
