older dell laptop installation issues

i have an old dell thinkpad laptop. im trying to install windows xp home edition 32 bit. everything works fine until it tries to install the devices. at that point it just freezes up on me. ive tried other disks but it just does the same thing. any thoughts ladies and gents?

On setup, or when going into Windows?

If when logging into XP, try going into safe mode.

If it's when you're trying to install devices, then do you have any external peripherals plugged in, like a printer, scanner, etc etc...try removing these first.

What devices is it trying to install?

Do you get completely past windows installing, then it trys to install other devices? What other devices is it needing?

Could also get the drivers from the manufacturer website and install them that way.

its when im actually installing windows. it gets to installing devices and the installation freezes. nothing else is connected to the laptop.
