I've got a computer that is (as you'll see from the system information) is quite old. It's still good for word processing, playing games, and running most 20th century video games when my other computer is occupied--but over the years, this old computer has accumulated some bugs.

Aside from the random errors and blank windows that appear on startup, the system has trouble shutting down. I choose "Shut Down" from the Start menu, and choose "Shut Down" in the box that follows. The computer goes through its normal shutdown sequence, but once the Windows 98 banner fills the screen, saying, "Windows is shutting down," the computer freezes. I can come back hours later, and the system will still not have shut down--it's stuck on that screen.

So I've given up shutting down properly, and have been forced to resort to "hard shutdown" (pressing and holding the tower's power button for 4-5 seconds) every time I want to turn the thing off. My question is--judging by the system specs below, do you think this is a healthy way to shut down such an old computer? Could it cause problems in the future? Why exactly is "hard shutdown" supposedly such a bad way to turn off a computer?

DxDiag results below. I've put the rest in the next post, since it was too long otherwise.

Thats a classic windows 98 issue... I use to get that ALL the time. When was your last reformat and install?

You might wanmt to investigate a linux os and the use of wine to run your games.

Yeah I think this affected early XP as well. Linux is a good idea but he will have to make sure to use a relatively low-footprint distro.
To answer the question about why shutting down is better than just powering down, it is so that applications and services have an opportunity to exit gracefully - this should help prevent them from staring up in an inconsistent state.

Linux is free and open-source, isn't it? Or am I thinking of something else? It would be interesting to try, but keep in mind that the computer in question has a 6 GB hard drive (5 GB of which are taken currently). OS's are pretty memory-consuming, as far as I know. There's also the problem of getting the OS onto the computer, since the thing appears to have a USB port even though the installed version of 98 doesn't support USB! So, unless all of Linux can fit onto a CD-RW...

Kmote--what I mean is, does "hard shutdown" (or "powering down" as you say) actually damage the computer hardware? That is, will it lead to damage to the hard drive, processor, etc.? Essentially, will it mean that, in time, the computer will be mostly unusable?

I haven't had any trouble with using the computer for the things I listed, at least during the period of time I've been forced to do hard shutdown. There are the weird startup bugs, but those were happening before the shutdown process got thrown out of whack.

Yes, linux is free and open source. There are distros (linux versions) available that can fit on a floppy disk so 6GB is loads. The problem is that you have 5GB used and you probably haven't got your data on a separate partition from Windows.

It is possible to damage the HDD if it looses power very suddenly, but most PSUs protect against that. So no, not really.

Are you suggesting that all of linux can be as small as 1.44 mb?? That's what my old floppy disks hold, and I haven't found any readily available ones that hold any more.

Also keep in mind (I know I haven't mentioned this yet) that this old computer also doesn't have an internet connection. Big disadvantage, I know, but that's why I have another computer!

I don't know anything about PSUs. I'm guessing they're Power Surge Units or something, but is it a safe bet that I have one? That is, do they come with most computers?

And, in terms of electricity, is "hard shutdown" any different from what happens at the very end of the normal shutdown process, when the whole computer turns off completely? When you talk about the HDD losing power suddenly, it sounds more like the electricity going out (as in a storm).

Yup, too most of your questions..

There are versions that fit on a 1.44mb floppy, but most run on CD's. Your biggest issue is the 64mb RAM, bt its not an issue.

Yes, psu is power supply, and yes every computer has one, and yes to the storm thing.

Perhaps getting Windows Millennium on that machine would be an idea. I have an (obsolete) Dell Latitude CPi with a PII of 300 MHz and 64 MB RAM. Windows ME runs fine on it.

-oo-

Alright - before everyone jumps all over me for mentioning Windows Millennium... :)

I still don't understand why so many people said and say WinME was worse than Win98.
It was *not*.
When a program crashed in Win98, the entire OS would hang a few second later (yes, the BSoD). When a program crashed in ME, which happened *much* less than in Win98, ME would happily keep on running (it just would "hang" when shutting down; I first had to reboot before it would shut down properly).

I have had Windows Millennium for many years, and on more than one computer, so I know what I am talking about. It is my experience that it was much better (read: more stable) than Windows 98. Strange that I seem to have been the only one who liked ME over 98.

Maybe my Win ME CD-rom was defective
