with my old comp (Win ME, may it never crash, pent 3 1.0, 512MBram) it randomly cuts out the display driver and goes to 640x480 and 16 colors. I do system restore, and it fixes it...for about 10 starts. then it goes back. is it windows me, may it never crash, or is it something else?

To me it sounds like there could be a problem with your windows ME installation, or dodgy sectors on your hard drive. Looks like it is knocking out drivers at random, which, being random make it harder to diagnose.

I just reinstalled windows a few weeks ago because it was doing that. I tried to install the latest driver from dell, but it didn't work, so I used the one that came with my computer.
Don't ask about using the driver from Nvidia. I had a long ordeal with that one, when I tried to install it direct. It is a Dell make of the Geforce2 Mx200 (almost positive about the 200) with s-video out
