notebook computers

just a general question i would like to know:
A notebook computer that has a Ni-Card battery continually requires recharging more often than when the notebook was purchased. Is the battery suffering from a memory effect or a discharging problem?

i would personally go with the discharging but my friend told me memory effect.. im studying for the A+ exam ...

I think it would be discharging but im not totally sure.
