Only problem with that explanation is that it happened a second time without anyone touching the PC

I'd be willing to bet that crappy PSU has something to do with it.

Hm. That seems plausible. Unfortunately I'm guessing that would mean that the damage to the motherboards is irreversible... Is there any way to test that theory?

Borrow a PSU from a friend to test not on the carpet, or go buy one from a local part store to test and then return (or keep if it works).
