Exclamation No display after windows splash screen

New to these forums, signed up to try and get an answer to this problem as I can't find an answer anywhere. I'm slowly losing what hair I have left on my balding head.

Recently decided to install a XP Pro on an old PC of mine (I previously had an OEM of XP Home on this machine and everything worked fine).

Machine is an old Pentium 4 1.7 Ghz, MSI MS-6534 mobo, 512 RAM and a Geforce 4 Ti4600.

Install of Pro went fine until booting up for the first time. As the system goes to desktop the graphics card stops sending output to the monitor and the fan on the card stops.

Restarted in safe mode and all OK, fan on the card spinning and I can see the desktop. 'Driver problem', I thought so installed the latest drivers - same problem so installed older versions of the drivers - same again.

The desktop will show under 'VGA mode' but whenever I try to install any version of an Nvidia driver the same problem occurs.

BIOS settings are all OK (as far as I can tell). There's no onboard graphics getting in the way, power settings for the AGP slot are fine. Haven't changed any hardware, just simply tried to flatten the machine with a new OS.

Have tried re-installing XP home and even tried Ubuntu Unix to see if it's a problem with the OS.

It may be a very simple fix but for the life of me I can't find the problem.

Yeah, realised that after. The first post asked me to log back on so I didn't think it had accepted the input and then changed my mind about the title. Can't find where to remove the duplicate post though!
