Default new external hard drive

I just bought a new hard drive and external enclosure. The "safely remove hardware" thing lists it, but no icon appears for it in "my computer."

what might the problem be and how could i fix it?

Go to Control Panel > Add Hardware, and hit should find anything you've added to your computer lately.

See if that works.

Are you using it in a USB 2.0 compliant slot?

got it working!
okay heres what i had to do in case someone else ever needs to know

right click on "my computer" and select manage

Select disc management in the left pannel

Run through the wizard that should pop up

after the wizard is complete, right click on the hard drive (pannel on the bottom right) that was just initialized and select "add partition"

Allow the drive to format for a while (mine took like 30min.)

Now right click on the drive again and select "mark partition as active"

...after that mine worked fine...

Once i thought i had that exact problem but it ended up being because the thingy that connects the cable to the hardrive with the lights n stuff slipped off and the computer was only reading the plug!!!
