new dvdr wont work

just purchased a new ASUS dvdrw, it wont play any dvd or do autorun on any disc. I checked windows explorer and the drive was able to detect the dvd/cd but it wont do anything. do i need to install anything for the drive to work?

Have you tried to view the DVD through Windows Media Player?

make sure all connections are completely secure...also, what is you boot priority set to for the drive?

i can see the label of the disc on my computer/explorer. but the problem is I cant view the contains of the drive. im using winxp, all the connections are fine. but its showing DVD-RAM, I got a multi-speed dvd writer. how can i make it DVD-ROM?
