new dvd writer not recognized

First, let me say that I am a newbie. I have a Sony Vaio with XPMCE. I have tried to replace an existing broken dvd writer with a new one. I tried first setting it up as a master, just as the first unit had been-my computer would not even boot. I then changed it to a slave, and Windows came back on. However, the computer does not recognize the drive-what the heck do I do now??

try to make your dvd as master, and go to bios and make it as first boot, then your hdd, and your floppy if you have one.

I will give this a try tomorrow-however, I am clueless as to how to operate the BIOS-I was there today and could not figure out how anything works-I've read some stuff about the master/slave thing and figure this is where my problem lies-thanks for your input and I will be back in the am
