new dvd burner acting stragely

I just bought this Plextor PX712UF external burner for my computer and after hooking it up I have run into a couple of problems.

The main thing is that it will read a dvd just fine, but when I put a blank dvd in the drive to burn a dvd it shows up as a cd drive. I was pretty confused by this.

What does the drive show up as in Device Manager?
What does the drive show up as in Windows Explorer?
If it's just showing up as a CD ROM/RW, you may need to install ASPI drivers (I believe thats it). If your using Nero, around 5.5, there's a download for it to solve this issue...
