New CPU cooler/fan question

I have a older Phenom build that the CPU cooler/fan is whining something fierce- pretty loud high pitched and gets worse as the PC is running longer. My latest build has a i5 - but I did not use the stock cooler and purchased an after market cooler for it. So, instead of purchasing a cooler for the whining Phenom stock cooler can I use the stock i5 cooler on it? Or is there a reason it wont work together and I will have to purchase another phenom cooler or an after market cooler?

I would think it will work - but don't want to get into it and find they are not compatible.

They aren't compatible. The stock cooler for the i5 is made for that socket and only that socket.

Also, the Phenom would severely overheat using an Intel stock cooler.

bummer - i was afraid of that- will any aftermarket cooler work?

Edit- OK need an AM3 socket aftermarket- quiet is best. But not willing to spend over $50\

I have no experience with that cooler so couldn't tell you. In theory it should be ok, then again not all coolers are created equally.
