"A network cable is unplugged"; only, not your average issue

If the ipconfig tells you that the media is disconnected then you have a couple things to check. First check the actual card and make sure that there is nothing stuck in it possibly keeping the cable from fully connecting. You said you get no lights on the card, so either the cable is bad (even though it worked on your laptop i would still try a different cable) or the connector on the card is bad.

The loopback test allows you to see if the computer is seeing the card.
 
So on a hunch I moved the desk out of the way, opened up the outlet and found that the actual wall outlet was wired wrong. I now need to go to home depot and get a new one, but I expect everything will work soon. Thanks for the help
 
Was it a punchdown jack or just the type that you hook around and screw down. You can usually just pull the cables and repunch them.
