my disc drive wonÂ’t recognize anything

when i put a burnt or store bought cd or dvd in to my computer it won't recognize it at all, it don't say that there is a disc in the disc drive and wsa wonder ing what I should do

is it a old drive?
might not be new enought to realy burnt disks.

no it came with my brand new computer but any way I talked to my cousin who is a mad freak when it comes to comes to computers and he said it was just a bad drive so I took the drive out of my old computer (which was also brand new) and put it in my new computer and now every thing is running smothly*knock on wood* thank's any way
