My CD drive was working properly days before, now my computer seemed to 'suddenly' couldn't detect my CD drive at all!

The icon for CD drive is no longer displayed on My Computer.
Neither does a window pops up automatically when I loads a disc.

FYI, I'm using Windows Professional XP. This is the first time I'd experienced this.

Can someone enlighten me on what's wrong with my CD drive?
How can I solve the problem, cause the drive is v important

I am guessing your cd drive just died. If all you need is a cd drive go buy a new one they are very cheap. I would suggest upgrading to a dvd burner. All the same functionalities of a cd drive plus some.

Yea if I remember correctly, my old one was not recognized by the computer at all. I had to get a new one.

Hi thanks all for the advice..

The CD drive lights up when I load a disc.
could it have been solely the cables problem?

BTW, how do i clear the CMOS. Thanks

Check the IDE cable. I had this once where you CD drive just stop playing any CD's. The drive light was on and it was shown in My Computer. I changed the IDE cable and it worked fine. I'd check it before you buy a new CD drive, it will save you a bit of money if it turns out to be the IDE cable.
