! my cd-rom is not responding?

a pop up warning tells me my cd drive is not ready! not accessible! also that it is locked by another application??
so it will not run my recovery disk that i need to recover my system to its original state? in which i need to do so i can install a internet and modem on this particular hp model? i'm lost

have you tried safe mode?

Can you provide any system info? What operating system, what programs are running in the background?

If you have windows you might check device manager to make sure the cdrom is not flagged- and also check your log files for error messages. Right click on "My Computer" and goto manage, there you will find the device manager and event viewer, which holds your log file information.
