Default Mic Problem

once ina while i ecounter the problem where my mic is just so soft when u talk into no one can hear u. when i was playing MW2 today no one could hear me in game so i got out and tested the hardware. when testing the only sound i could get was when i hit the mic with my finger u could see the volume bar go up..then i tested the mic in skype and it worked completely fine. do i need to change something on the computer to get to work on other applications and such? im really stumped
