Posted this yesterday and can't find my post, a pity this site doesn't direct us to our own mails and hopefully answers. Advice on this please!!
I went into a site of bird song two days ago, using windows media player and a warning came up telling me 'C' was short of space. What can this mean? I do have quite a lot of music stored on there. Is this what they mean. Mine is a windows xp proffessional and it is not overloaded with games and other such junk.
Help please! I'm a computer novice so simple language required.

You can subscribe to a thread you or someone else started so that Tech-Forums sends you an email when there is a reply.

Onto your problem. It means your hard drive is running out of space to hold data. Go into "My Computer" and right click on the C: drive icon. Click on properties. There will be a blue and purple pie chart there. Post the amount of GB of free space and used space it says on top of the pie chart. This is just to see how much space you have left until it becomes a major problem.

If Windows is telling you it's running short on space you will probably have to either perform some cleanup or add another hard drive for extra space. There are disk tools provided by Windows among other things you can do to clear space.

First post your amount of space and then we'll go onto your options of freeing memory.

What it means?
It simply means that you are running out of space on you hard drive.
C: is the name of your hard-drive I presume.

To fix it, you can either go out and buy a new hard-drive, or delete a few huge files from your PC.

Thanks for the prompt response. I've gone through the usual cleanups this am, disc frag etc and 'properties' tell me I have 9.89 GB used and 142. GB unused. Could it be a hiccup of 'Real Player' whose bird song I logged into?
Another daft question!!! Ran Norton and I have almost 700.000 files to scan. Is this a normal amount? Ran Spybot and noticed one or two items running along containing 'casino' and other such stuff. What are they? Were do they come from? Do I have some dodgy stuff lurking in the back of the machine?
Have patience, I really am a novice, but trying!!

Well if you have 9.89 used and 142 unused there is something wrong with Windows detection. When you ran the antivirus and spyware tests they didn't find anything other than the Casino files?

Windows has been known to wrongfully tell it's users they were running out of memory in the past but 700,000 files sounds like it should be taking up more than 10GB. I have almost 400GB taken up and Symantec Corporate only shows 1,120,000 files when running a scan.

You're sure the hard drive space you posted isn't the other way around?

Yeah, that sounds messed up.
Are you %100 sure its not the other way round...?
When you're viewing your C drive's space (With the pie chart), press the PrtSc button on your keyboard to take a picture of your screen.
Go into Paint and press "ctrl+v" to paste.
then display the picture in this thread =]

download AVG Anti-virus
Run that instead of Norton...It's free.
It should ask you to download some updates, but eh' download them =]
Somehow, people rate it higher than Nortron, although it's free :| ^_^

By the Casino things, did you mean there were ad's inside of Search' and Destroy, or that it found spyware called Casino?

Not sure about the Prtsc info, do you mean the keyboard? Checked again and the figures I gave are correct, still showing an enormous amount of free space. (Big pink area). Someone has suggested there are a lot of 'hidden files', my fault since I have only just created an account for my granddaughter. Went into 'search all files' and less than 70.000 showed up. What do I do now? Same person reccommends re-installing windows. Do tell me that this is not neccessary!!!
Barb

Well, for starters you could view hidden files by opening 'My Computer' then clicking on the 'Tools' menu. When you're there click 'Folder Options', then on the 'View' tab. In the list there is a button that says 'Show hidden files and folders'; click it. =]
Then it should show all of your files and folders that are hidden. To tell the difference, the icon of the file looks faded.

To make the file unhidden, right click on the file and then uncheck the box that says Hidden.

Re-installing Windows would be a good idea =]
Just don't forget to backup all of the files you want, like your music.
I guess re-installing windows is the easiest option to do, but backing up might take some time if you don't have an external hard drive or something.

Think re-installing is going to be the option. Just how easy is that?? I've never done anything like that. Do you think I should bring in the man???
Barb

It sounds like you don't know too much about computers so if you really want to reinstall Windows I would recommend someone come in. It isn't too hard but if something goes wrong then you're stuck without a computer until someone comes in that knows this stuff well.

So Windows is still telling you that your C: drive is running out of space? If it's only 70,000 files that sounds fine. I would just ignore it as it won't be a problem.

Also how old is your antivirus program? It is possible that it is just too old a version to catch a virus that could be doing this. It doesn't matter how up to date your definitions are. It also depends on the actual program itself. I know I've went through security and virus coding. :)
