Default memory upgrade on gateway notebook

ok i have an older gateway solo notebook that was givien to me for free. it only has 160mb ram and can take up to 288mb. i checked gateway's website and the memory upgrade is $80! it says its a 144pin sodimm module of 128mb pc66 ram, i checked tigerdirect and newegg and they only carry pc100 at the slowest. so my question is can i install pc100 (which cost about $5.00 at newegg) at it work fine or does it require pc66? if i cant use the cheap 3rd party memory i wont worry about it but if i can max it out for $5.00 i'll go for it.
