Maxtor External HDD Unallocated?

When loading either ubuntu or fedora live even the usb drive here is one of the first items seen. The fact that the drive is being seen in the Disk Management is a good sign there showing there's no problem with the drive itself.

With the drive plugged in ubuntu should automatically detect it being there but unable to mount it as a viewable drive if no partition is on it whether Linux or MS. Most external drives come with a factory partition already present unless that was incomplete where you then simply reformat or create a new one.

You could try booting off of the live cd version of ubuntu or the dvd version of Knoppix 5.2 for seeing if you can successfully browse the drive. You first have to go into menu bar>places to see if the partition is seen there in order to have it mounted.

Here when simply double clicking on an external drive the icon appears right away on the desktop making it accessible just like you would when going into MyComputer or Computer in Windows. The best guide on this using a ubuntu live cd is seen at Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer :: the How-To Geek

Is ubuntu live same as knoppix live?

Those are two separate Linux distrobutions there. But both can easily see onto MS type Fat16, 32, and NTFS partitions. Another rather old article explaining how to use Knoppix for data rescue instead of ubuntu is seen at Computer First Aid Using Knoppix

Linux as the expression goes comes in many "flavors" since there are a large number of separate distributions for the open source OS.

These write-ups are all for your main boot hard drive. Mine's an external firewire hard drive. Is there a write for this situation?

Those are little more then just for the Host/OS drive as you can see from the files being copied from an external usb drive onto a second storage partition on the Vista drive here.

The articles point the abilities to copy from any MS type partition while being booted from a live distro like ubuntu or Knoppix.
