Lost volume

Probably a basic question, but I cannot get any sound to come through on my desk top. Running Windows XP. Have checked obvious things like power to speakers and switching on speakers!
There is no volume icon on the bottom of screen toolbar. When I try to install it from control panel, I get the error message 'Volume control panel not installed'.
Any ideas

you probably need to install the drivers from your motherboard for your sound.. unless your using a soundcard.. then you need to install the drivers for that..

cutting to the chase.. its a driving problem... give us your mobo model and i can try to help you out
