Default Logitech PS/2 to USB with Windows XP Media no workie

I have a Trackman Marble+ trackball (one of the large low trackballs - I love it to death, the newer higher versions make my hands hurt), and recently bought a HP desktop which doesn't have 2 PS/2 ports(wife and kids need regular mouse so they get the PS/2 port but when I plug it or the logitech into a PS/2 to USB adapter neither work), So I bought a PS/2 to USB converter, but when I plug in the trackball with that, all I get is the USB "new device" dialog, followed by an error warning "the installation failed because a function driver was not present for this device instance" and no option except for "finish".

The desktop runs windows XP, and I already tried installing the MouseWare drivers.

Any help would be very much appreciated - thanks!
