I have a Compaq Presario 700 laptop that I recently purchased from an individual the said all it need was new battery and power adapter. I installed the new battery and ran it dead as the instructions from the manufacture instructs to do. When I plugged in the power adapter to charge the battery there was a voltage spike and smoke appear. Now I have nothing, no power to the laptop. Has anyone else ever had this problem? Is there a simple repair for this or do I have a toasted laptop? Thanks for you help.

Are you sure the power adapter was the correct voltage.
Also, are you sure the laptop wasn't broken when you bought it.

I had the laptop hookup and trying it out before I purchased it . The old battery always indicated that it was low, so I had to plug the power adapter up to keep the laptop going. I replace the battery and the power adapter with the identical units that I had. The laptop seemed to work fine until it would lose power. Do you have any other ideas, thanks
