laptop lcd is dim

I have an HP pavilion zt1000 and the lcd is so dim I can hardly see it. I am guessing that means the problem is with the back light or the inverter. I am looking for anyone that has any experience and might suggest which it is or ways to figure it out. If its the inverter I am going to do it myself but if its the lamp thats pretty complicated right? How can I pinpoint the problem?. again I can see stuff on the screen its just compleatly dim and no adjustments to the brightness make any difference. Thanks for the help, Trevor

Most likely the inverter board.

not sure how similar the laptopss are to eachother. but theres usally a button on the top of the keyboard that u press in combination with the up or down button adjacent to it and this causes an adjustment in the backlight brightness.

whats the battery life like on the laptop? lots of laptops go into a low power mode for the backlight.
