laptop dvd-drive

i would like some suggestions as to how to approach this problem.

i have been given a clevo m22es notebook to diagnose and repair. it seems to have a messed up cd-r combo drive. for some reason it reads dvd's but will not read cd's or burn cd's. i have ruled out a windows problem by trying to boot from a cd which failed.

how should i fix it so far i've thought:
1. flash the firmware
2. replace the drive

i don't think there are any other options but if there are i would like to hear them.

take the cd dvd drive out of your notebook, open your window and through the drive as far as it will go, since you are sure it is the drive. By a new drive, might be able to get a dvd DL burner, cd burner combo...if the notebook supports it.
