It all depends what type of video card you have in your notebook.
look at your vidoe props
type in the run box desk.cpl
hit enter
click properties , what do you see?
usually though, yes one will go off when the other goes on unless connecting through an AV port,,, i did say usually so try with a monitor. Some notebooks , especially older ones you have to set which monitor in the bios.
