Issues with soundcard + DVD

First post. Greetings and all those pleasantries.

Short summary of my problem: My soundcard and my DVD-ROM don't work. The unit manager finds them, but they don't function properly (at all), if that makes sense. So far, I've tried reinstalling drivers, running Microsoft's FixIt tool as well as uninstalling the units and hoping that Plug'n'Play would recognize them. I've also opened the chassis to see if there were any loose connections. Couldn't find any, but found loads of dust, so opening it up wasn't a bad idea after all... Basically, this is as far as my "knowledge" stretches and so I come looking for help from more knowledgeable people. I probably should add that virtual disc drives through Daemon Tools don't work either.

I've run a SiSoft Sandra diagnosis to try and determine what kind of hardware I've got since I've lost most of my documentations. The computer is a little over two years old and I'm still running Windows XP SP3 as my OS. Thankful for any assistance I can get.

Sorry, I know that it's very bad form to bump your own topics, but I realized that my post was a jumbled mess and didn't described my problem very well, nor did I give sufficient details on what my system is. Needless to say, the problem persists. I'll try to provide more details and hopefully illuminate my problem more. I'm personally thinking it's motherboard related and leaning towards something to do with drives, but I'm certainly not sure and have no idea how to fix it.

The problem: No sound and no working optical drive (including virtual ones).

I'm personally thinking it's motherboard related and leaning towards something to do with drives, but I'm certainly not sure and have no idea how to fix it.

The problem: No sound and no working optical drive (including virtual ones).

My motherboard: ASUS P5KPL-CM with onboard audio using the IA Audio Driver V6.0.1.7400 for Windows 32 XP.
My DVD-ROM: TSST SH-S223F
My OS: Windows XP SP3 all the latest updates and such.

So far I've tried updating the audio drivers as well as the chip set, with no results. I've swept the computer for malware with three different programs (Spybot, SUPERAntiSpyware and Windows Essential Security) just because, why not? Didn't find anything other than tracking cookies.

I've also checked inside the chassis for loose wires and such. It shouldn't have an effect on on-board audio, but again why not? Also, the devices show up in the device manager, but with a "warning sign" that shows them to be malfunctioning.

Honestly, this is far as I'm able to go by myself. Any pointers on what I can try next, beyond buying new hardware?
