Identifying ghosting problem.

I've been looking into cooling options (under £100) for my PC but my LED monitor has suddenly started to ghost (e.g. small white trail following the cursor), this wasn't happening before and my monitor although a good 4.5 years old still boasts a 2ms response time. This could be because of GPU overheat (although speedfan seems to suggest otherwise) and there have been other signs to indicate the GPU overheating such as crashes where the fan would speed up to 100% (although the PC is new and not dusty). But to crush this theory when I put the DVI cable into the on board mobo. video, the monitor would still ghost.

So what's the next step is my question. Should I get a new monitor or is their any other steps to try to see whats the problem part.

Do you have a spare monitor, so we can rule out that it is not the GPU?

Did you install the latest drivers? What are your system specs?

I do have another monitor but that ghosts a lot anyway so couldn't test on it.

My specs are:
CPU: i5 2500k @ Stock
GPU: XFX 6870
RAM: 2x4GB 1333MHz
PSU: Corsair TX850M
Mobo: ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3
HDD: WD Black 1TB

I've tried messing with the refresh rate and resolution but still persists.
I'm pretty sure it's either the cable or the screen since the motherboard on board video still makes it ghost. Do DVI cables tend to break?
