How to test a video card

I suspect that my video card ( Nvidia GeForce 8800 series PCI Express ) does not
perform properly.( some colors are pale,monitor turns black for a few seconds etc )

How does one test a video card ? Are there any programs available to do so ?

What would you recommend ?

Does this happen randomly? Or while you're playing games. If you're playing games when this happens, how hot does the card get (or what are the temps in general?). If you're on XP, you can check them with ATiTool, as well as stress the card. If you're on Vista, you can check the temps with RivaTuner.

Could also try replacing the card. Either RMA it and see if that fixes the problem, or borrow a video card from somebody (or if you have a spare use that).
