Exclamation Help!!! DVD/CD not working

I have this 3 month old Acer T690 with Vista Home. So far, I have been pretty happy with it....until yesterday.

Yesterday, I started to run a program that needs a cd, and after clicking the icon, the computer said it could not find the cd dirve. Looking on explorer, I noticed that the cd drive letter was not there.

Going to Device Manager and checking the properties, I get "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

If I uninstall the DVD/CD under Device Manager, the OS will try to reinstall, but will then fail.

I have removed the drivers and reinstalled....I have downloaded and installed a file from Acer called NTI CD-DVD Upgrade Patch which did not help.....I have looked for new drivers.....I even went to the store and bought an external DVD/CD that did the same thing once connected.

The last time I used the DVD/CD was 10/28. Thinking that it might have been a wonderful upgrade patch from Windows, I check and the last one installed was 10/10/07. I am installing all updates and will run a virus check with new definitions shortly, however, I don't think this is a virus.

Please Help...I really need this DVD/CD to finish my work.

Default Re: Help!!! DVD/CD not working

FIXED IT!!!!

Apparently this is a common Window problem. For those that are interested or suffer from a similar fate, i found it at this web site:

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program in Windows XP: "error code 31"

And the problem is:

After you remove a program from your computer, you can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive successfully. The CD drive or the DVD drive does not appear. Or, you receive an error message when you try to access the drive. This article contains two methods to resolve this problem. One of the methods requires that you manually modify the Windows registry to remove the UpperFilters registry entry and the LowerFilters registry entry. You must restart the computer after you follow the steps in this article.
