ok our downstairs computer has worked fine for the 18 months we've had it then my mum comes to switch it on this morning and what happens is:

switch it on>POSTs as normal>Then Windows XP failed to shut down properly blah blah>select Normal it carrys on then BSODs and restarts and the same thing happens over and over again

I need help with this quick cos everyone has all their work on it oh and id rather not format it

sounds like some files on the hard drive were corrupted.

I would remove the hd and plug it into another puter...then run scandisk on it

update: backed everything up onto my drive...attemped to format and reinistall withthe disk that came with the comp and it wouldnt boot and we need the comp so i just installed vista :S seems to be working fine but if it becomes a problem we're gonna get an XP disk from somewhere

did you run scandisk? Find any bad sectors?

i ran chdisk and it supposedly corrected bad sectors but in all honesty i forgot to run scandisk but its working fine now just need the amily to get used to vista lmao

well if it were me I'd be sure that the hard drive was 100% healthy before relying on it again.

ok ill do it tomoz the HD is only 18 months old but is there a possibilty it could be damaged?
