Having trouble figuring out what's wrong with a hard drive.

Hey everyone. I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 with 750GB of storage. Not currently in use because I needed to replace it. It started giving me blue screen crashes way too frequently. And when I went to copy some files to my external hard drive, USB, DVD, any where really, it sudden stopped the transfer and wouldn't complete at all. Also gave me trouble when trying boot up. Had to go through the start up repair many times. And made my computer lag a lot. Tried formatting and doing a clean install but still continued with these problems.

My professor told me to try a low level format so I did but still no luck.

Unfortunately I have forgotten to write down the error codes it gave me but I do remember it saying at start up: " Hard disk status: BAD. Replace your hard disk."

I don't know if its fixable at all and I already replaced it but if it can be fixed, I would like to get it fixed and use it as an external with a SATA to USB adapter.
Sorry about no error codes but if any of the problems I listed give any clues to what's wrong with it, please let me know.

I appreciate the help.
