Default Hardware diagnosis problems?

I was trying to rebuild a older computer of mine to give to a friend but after I rebuild it i keep having problems with the is and the HD. I have swapped in a new HD but it hasn't fixed the problem. Is there any hardware diagnosis software that can be purchased to check all hardware components or would a stress test work? If so where can I find? Thanks!

Have you installed the Chipset Drivers? Here's a link to the newest ones, they just came out a few days ago

Intel Chipset Software Installation 9.1.1.1015 WHQL download from Guru3D.com
