Default Harddisk not detected

Hi guys,

I built my own computer about 2 weeks ago. The problem is the Harddisk is not detected in BIOS ( Boot recognizes the Harddisk) since the first day. I could manage to load windows and until now everthing is running smooth.
Today I wanted to install a second OS (Linux). I get the message that there isn't a Harddisk on my computer. I tried after that to install a second version of windows with the same result- Harddisk not detected.
I tried to change the jumpers on my Harddisk with the result that Windows didn't start up. What's the problem?

P 4 630 3.0 Ghz
Asus P5LD2
80 GB HDD Seagate IDE
windows xp pro SP2

thanks for your help.
