Default Hard Drive Question

About every 10 minutes or so, my hard drive with act like it is all of a sudden running at 100% for about 2-3 seconds. During that time, the computer is pretty much frozen, but returns to normal after the short period. It is really annoying while playing games, making Power Point presentations. It is a Hitachi 80 gig 7200 rpm hard drive in an HP zv6000 laptop. Thanks for any help.

Wes

Are you sure it's the hard drive? Check your power options- could have something to do with them. Is the laptop hot when it does this, or it starts 10 minutes after powering on?

it just randomly does it. It doesn't necessarily happen only when it is hot or if the comp has been running for a while. It will even do it when I have no apps running. It is a replacement hard drive (i.e. not the original).

do you have enough ram, inefficient memory would cause the system to use the harddrive as a virtual memory.
