Hard drive help

Well my computer is beyond saving. I know for a fact that my hard drive works though. It had 400gb worth of memory and it has important personal things.

My sister gave me her hp laptop.

What im trying to say is how can i access my hard drive using my sisters laptop. im guessing something with a usb?

My computer cant turn on so i have my HD completly disconnected from the desktop.

any help would be appreciated.

You need an external case. Plug in the HDD from your desktop, bang.

Just whether you have a SATA or ide drive.

Most of them are compatible with both. Just when you buy one, make sure you have the correct connection.

use it like a flash drive and disconnect before reoving.

I have that same model and it does work great. I had a HDD start clicking on me and could not access it. Hooked the cable up to it and I was able to get all my files off of it. They are quite a bit cheaper than an external case too.

I'd get a full blown enclosure, that way the drive is protected and you can keep using it wherever you go (just have to plug it in). I have this enclosure and it works well for IDE and SATA drives:
