Default Hard Drive Failure

Okay so my friends hard drive just failed and so I'm doing a reinstall of Windows XP and when I boot up with xp and try to format the drive it says

An error occured while setup was updating partition information

When I try to delete the hard drive it says

This partition cannot be deleted then it takes me back to the drive list then BSOD

Sounds like exactly what the title says... hard drive failure. I'm not sure what else that would be.

So pretty much the only thing to do is replace it? No way of reformatting?

No. There is no way to format a damaged drive. The read/write heads could have failed and if that is the case nothing can save the drive.
