Default Hard Drive Compatibility

Hello, recently my Dell XPS M1530 notebook had a motherboard related crash. The HD is (keeping fingers crossed) fine. I just ordered an older HP DV9000 notebook off of Ebay as a replacement. Is there any chance of my hard drive seamlessly going into the HP without a hitch? I mean, will I just be able to plug it into the new laptop and things will be like they were on my Dell? OS and all? Thanks so much.

If they are both IDE/SATA, then yeah, you can slip it in.

However, Windows is activated to your board. So moving it will result in a re-ativation. Unless it is retail, you can re-activate it.

Also, with new hardware, Windows will get confused. It is used to a set of hardware, then all the sudden, most of that hardware isn't there anymore.

I was successful in doing so between two boards, but they had the same chipset. Not recommended for noobs :P
