Default Hard-disk backup...a few questions

Hi People,

Recently I disassembled my computer. It's a long story, but I won't be able to reassemble the computer for about 1 1/2 months.

I had thought that the data stored on the hard disk would be all right for this period of time - that upon reassembling the computer I will find the data still intact. But I read an article recently that said that drives need to be 'powered up' every two-three months, otherwise data loss occurs.

My first question is - how long before data loss starts to occur?

My second question is - how sensitive are hard disks to being jolted? Not knocked directly, but infrequent up-and-down movement within a protective box. I once spoke to a guy who said he could throw hard disks around without anything happening to them, but I somehow doubt his story.

Your drive should be fine for the 1 1/2 months that you will
have the computer apart. I don't think I have ever seen
a drive lose data from not being started up.

Drives are sensitive to being jolted. They are not sensitive
to being moved. Drives are being shipped in computers
all over the world so just moving them isn't a problem.
Dropping them is a different story.
