Default Hard disk always working

My hard disk seems to be constantly working these days. It's getting quite old too so it makes a very loud noise, which gets frustrating and it shakes my whole computer case and the floor.

I attatched an image to show how the hard disk just seems to be doing "chunks" of work, about 2 or 3 a second at a constant speed, this can last a very long time. It does it while im working and while i leave the computer to do it's own thing.

Windows Vista, Maxtor 6L200M0 is it's name in the device manager.

Might Vista be defragging?

I thought that, but i made sure that defragging only runs when i tell it to, it hasn't got a schedule.

I regularly run Adobe After Effects, Premiere and Photoshop, MSN Messenger, Firefox, Daemon Tools. I'm not aware of anything else particularly interesting that is running in the background.
